Value Networks

and the true nature of collaboration

Chapter 5: Advanced Analysis

Now that I know the

value networks methodology I would

 not consider doing a

six sigma, Lean or any other kind of project without first doing a

VNA to provide the 'systems' context for

the initiative.

Advanced Analysis

Advanced Value Network Analysis includes a rich array of

indicators to predict and manage performance.

While the visuals and maps and the core analyses are very powerful, there is much more to the Value Network Analysis (VNA) method than visual modeling. This chapter describes some of the ways that people use more advanced indicators for deeper assessment of value networks.

VNA is a highly integrative methodology. It can be readily combined with other performance tools such as process modeling, system dynamics, social network analysis, and others. This chapter describes:

- Integrating VNA and process tools to reveal hidden network patterns in business processes.

- Monitoring and managing network performance with indicators for value creation and asset management, optimizing role and network performance, and managing risk.

- Using VNA to improve marketing and business messages with website analysis.

- Incorporating cost/benefit analysis and performance indicators.

The next chapter, Selected Case Studies, will provide more detailed case studies and examples of these approaches, such as this one:

This example shows that when a value network map, below, was completed, it became apparent that Viagra(R) had more effects than expected - such as a broader discussion and awareness of men's health.

This case study, Drug Discovery Value Network, is
 in the Case Studies chapter.

Paul J. Edwards applied the ValueNet Works(tm) methodology to the innovation study behind the drug Viagra(R). With the help of Dr. Nicolas K. Terret, co-inventor of the drug, Edwards traces the development path through the identification of participants or roles, tangible and intangible deliverables, and the analysis of their interactions. Insights into value drivers for the pharmaceutical industry demonstrate the applicability of the value network approach in pinpointing value inflection points that impact pharmaceutical innovation and productivity.
