About this Book

Why a free live digital edition?

This book is being provided as a live digital edition for two reasons: 1) It can be instantly translated into any of the 52 languages supported by Google Translate, and 2) It will allow continuous updating and additions of cases and examples provided by users of this approach. We are publishing the details of conducting a Value Network Analysis (VNA) as a non-proprietary methodology. This means it can more readily meet the open method requirements of standards bodies. We encourage adoption of the method in its full integrity - as a method and framework for business modeling.

However, it is also a "real" book with an ISBN number that is recognized by book cataloguing systems. This makes the book suitable for citation and referencing by academics and others. It is published with a Creative Commons license (details at the bottom of every page). This means people may use the materials and reproduce them for personal and educational use. The only restrictions are that the source is attributed and that no derivative works are created without the express permission of the author.

How to use this book

This book is a comprehensive "how to" guide for using the core concepts of value network modeling, analytics, and value conversion of tangible and intangible assets. It provides step-by-step tips for conducting a Value Network Analysis. VNA is extremely versatile and can be applied to many different business challenges. Not all features of the method need to be used in all cases. Many find the visual mapping to be quite powerful and sufficient to do as a standalone exercise. Others are drawn to VNA as a tool for managing intellectual capital or intangibles in a deeper analysis of specific transactions, or to use other features to improve business performance. There are use cases and examples throughout.

Chapter 1: Value Networks serves as a basic introduction to the nature of collaborative work and Value Network Analysis - what is it, when to use it, and how to use it.

Chapter 2: Mapping the Value Network covers VNA as a visual mapping language. There are plenty of guidelines for how to complete the maps and suggestions for how to facilitate groups through the mapping process.

Chapter 3: Examples is a representative set of case examples of how people use the simplest level of VNA - the mapping - for business insights.

Chapter 4: Analysis Basics describes some of the most common analysis questions that people address using the method. Many of these chapters are about transactions within the value network, and some look at overall dynamics and show how to work with system level issues.

Chapter 5: Advanced Analysis provides examples of how to integrate VNA with process and workflow tools, to apply traditional approaches such as cost/benefit analysis, and to develop more advanced analytics that are made possible with the help of technology.

Chapter 6: Selected Case Studies is a collection of more advanced applications of VNA.

Chapter 7: Deep Dive into the Methodology is for those who are interested in the origins of the method and other theoretical aspects such as maturity models, comparison with other methods, and other technical nuances.

Chapter 8: Downloadable Materials provides convenient downloads of materials that can be used for a VNA project or for trainers and educators to train others in conducting a VNA. Also included are review questions for study leading to becoming a qualified practitioner of VNA.

Chapter 9: Community Contributions contains articles and academic papers contributed by the larger community of practitioners of VNA.
